css.engineering.uiowa.edu    Class Accounts

Beginning with the fall 2005 semester, all Engineering classes are created in the University course management system call ICON. Many functions of managing a class, such as posting files and grades, are provided by ICON.

A class computer account provides space and convenience to develop and publish web pages and computer-based instruction materials, and easily share those materials with your class.

Web Home Page

A web directory and template set of HTML files are automatically created with your class account. The directory is named public_html. This directory contains the template files which are designed as “fill-in-the-blank" documents. You can use these templates to design your own web pages from scratch. The files are:

index.html Welcome/home page template. You must name your initial page index.html
admin.html Administrative information: instructor names, office hours, email addresses, grading policies
email.html Form for class members to post email to the TA
exam.html Exam results and/or exam solutions
lecture.html Lecture notes
probs.html Problem sets and solutions
schedule.html Course syllabus
supplemental.html Miscellaneous materials
old.html Past problem sets, quizzes or exams

Using from Linux

To edit these files from Linux, you can use any familiar text editor (vi, emacs) or you can use any of the html editors included in the Linux load.

Using from Windows

We configure each class account so that you can mount a network drive and connect directly to your class account home directory or to the web directory. After logging into your Windows machine using your personal account, you can mount the class account directory by mapping the drive. Go to Start | My Computer | Tools | Map Network Drive…. Select a drive letter and in the Folder: area, type

\\sharename.drive.engr.uiowa.edu\sharename

where sharename is the name of your class account or web directory share. For example, if the class account is cee045, the path is \\cee045\engr.uiowa.edu\cee045; if your web directory share is cee_050web the path would be \\cee_050web.drive.engr.uiowa.edu\cee_050web.

We recommend that you access and modify files in the class account using the drive mapping as described above because the file permissions will remain such that people can read the web pages. If you login directly to the class account and modify files, those file permissions will need to be reset to give appropriate rights. You must set file permissions from Linux, not from Windows. See creating web pages for information on the commands to set permissions.

Class Account Disk Quota

As of April 2007, class accounts have a disk quota of 1.5GB.

Turnitin Plagiarism Detector

The University of Iowa has licensed a plagiarism detection tool, Turnitin, available to all instructors. If you are an instructor, visit the support area for instructors. If you are a student, there is a support area for students.
