Configuring Thunderbird
Thunderbird is a graphical
mail client that runs on Windows (Linux, and Macintosh) computers and is the default email client. It is written and maintained by the Mozilla group, who created the browser by the same name.
More about Thunderbird from the Mozilla site.
If you are working in a self-administered computer here or at home, download Thunderbird from Mozilla.org and install it.
To start Thunderbird from Windows, go Start | All Programs | Mail & Scheduling | Mozilla Thunderbird.
Thunderbird's Account Wizard starts. Choose Email account and Next. The second screen enter your name, e.g., Bea Greene, and your email account, e.g., bgreene@engineering.uiowa.edu. On the third screen, select IMAP and enter the incoming server mail.engineering.uiowa.edu and click Next. For Incoming User Name, enter your account name (bgreene in this example) and click Next. and outgoing server mail.engineering.uiowa.edu. The summary screen lists the information you entered; if it is correct click Finish. Click Back to correct information.
Once that information has been entered, Thunderbird prompts for your password to open your mail account. Once Thunderbird is running, make this additional setting: go to Tools | Account Settings.... Select Server Settings and under "Use secure connection:", select TLS.
To
provide increased email security, CSS requires TLS/SSL security on the server
that sends email and requires authentication to that server. To send email
on the engineering mail server, you need to set these things:
1) the correct SMTP address: mail.engineering.uiowa.edu;
2) allow or use TLS/SSL to send mail; and
3) authentication to the SMTP mail server.
When running Thunderbird Mail, go to Tools | Account Settings... then to Outgoing Server (SMTP) to set the SMTP server, TLS, and authentication. See the illustration at right.
1 ) Server Name: mail.engineering.uiowa.edu and specify port 587.
2 ) To set authentication, check "Use name and password" and enter your User Name, which should be your login ID. In this example, the User Name is "bgreene."
3 ) Use secure connection: select TLS.
Other settings for this mail account can be set from Tools | Account Settings. Set such things as how often to check for new mail, how to treat mail that you delete, where to start replies to messages, and so on. If you want to read mail from another mail account, select Add Account; you must answer a series of questions like the ones used to set up your initial mail account.
From Tools | Options you can change settings about fonts used, where attachments are stored, automatic spelling check, and setting alerts for when new mail arrives.
