Elder and Hering Labs
The Hering lab, 1220 SC, and Elder lab, 1231 SC, are on the first floor of the Seamans Center. Together the labs have 124 computers: 104 Windows XP computers and 20 Linux workstations. There are four color scanners connected to Windows computers, two in Elder (north and south) and two in Hering (north and south). Each lab has two laser printers for printing output from Linux or Windows applications.
Both labs are open 24 hours/day, 7 days/week except when CSS closes a lab for cleaning or maintenance.
The Henry Electronic Classroom, 1245 SC, has 33 Windows computers, 32 for students and 1 for the instructor. When that room is not used by a scheduled class, it can be used as computer lab space by any Engineering computer account holder. See also the use policy, the reservation form, and the current semester's room schedule. Read about the equipment in 1245.
In the Elder and Hering labs there is a mix of Linux and Windows : 20 Linux workstations and 104 Windows computers. There are different models of workstations, with different CPUs, speeds, amounts of RAM, and peripherals (e.g., CD-ROM, CD/DVD burner, DVD-ROM, Firewire, USB). For more information, see our Lab Hardware Guide.

Read the Computer Lab Use Guidelines, which describe how you can make the lab a productive place to work.
During the regular school year, the Seamans Center building is open
Monday-Thursday 6:00am -10:00pm
Friday 6:00am - 5:00pm
Saturday 8:00am - 5:00pm
Sunday 12:00pm -12:00am
If you need after hours access, get an access card from CSS, 1256 SC. Read about electronic card access to SC.
Every Friday during the school year, the CSS labs, Hering (1220 SC) north and south; Elder (1231 SC) north and south, are shut down for cleaning beginning about 5pm, ending at midnight. Three labs remain open while one lab is cleaned. Custodial staff give users a 30-minute warning before closing the gate to the lab being cleaned.
If you lose or find something in the Elder or Hering labs, please report or bring the item to the consulting office, 1253 SC. CSS has a procedure for tracking reports of lost items and found items turned in.
The general assignment classrooms in SC -- 1505, 2133, 2217, 2229, 3026, 3315, 3321, 3505, and 4030 -- have Windows computers and ceiling-mounted projectors. The classroom computers are in the Iowa domain, which requires using your Hawk ID. For information about logging in and what software you have access to, read about classroom login. Look at the FSG site for pictures and details about the general assignment classrooms in SC.
These rooms also have a plug so that a laptop can be connected and its screen displayed from the ceiling-mounted projector.
There are Linux laptops available for use in 2217, 2229, and 3505. Read the laptop use policy and information about how to use them. The Linux laptops must be reserved for class use.
The 3111, 3210, 3220, and 4511 conference rooms have Windows computers and ceiling-mounted projectors, wireless keyboards and mice. Room 3501 has a plasma screen and computer with wireless mouse and keyboard. These computers are in the Engr domain. You can login using your engineering account and password, which gives you access to your home directory files and the standard engineering software.
You can also login to the local computer. From the login dialogue box, in Log on to: select X-COEXXX (this computer). In User name: enter instructor. This account has no password. You have access to all the software installed locally on the computer, which includes most of the standard engineering software.
Rooms 4501 and 4504 have projectors; you must provide your own computer. 2228 SC is a video conferencing room; contact the Facility Manager to reserve this room.
