HCS2000 Description

HCS2000 is a specialized program used by traffic engineers to analyze traffic patterns to determine maximum vehicle capacity and level of service of different types of roadways. Freeways, weaving, ramp, two lane, and multilane patterns at signalized and unsignalized segments and intersections are covered. This software package is excellent for rough analyses, though less comprehensive than other programs available in the college because it does not allow for complex traffic situations that involve multiple flow or signal combinations. Synchro, a Trafficware package, is a more comprehensive analysis program accessible to students.

HCS2000 Usage

How It Is Used

Initially, users are shown a screen containing different clickable graphics that correspond to each analysis type (i.e., ramp, two-lane, etc.). Once an option has been chosen, the user can select an operations or planning analysis, which allows the engineer to analyze either existing traffic patterns or to project flow for a given roadway segment or intersection. A screen that resembles a hard-copy intersection analysis form is then displayed, and you enter information such as number of lanes and usage, peak hour factor, and signal layout and phasing. HCS then calculates the level of service, adjusted volumes, delay, and unmet demand.

What It Does

HCS2000 is used to calculate levels of service and delay for roadway segments and intersections. Input and output worksheets are suitable for printing and are available in several user-selected formats (operations summary, performance summary, capacity, level of service, etc.) to suit the needs of each project.

Usage Information

HCS2000 is accessible on Windows-based computers in the Elder and Hering labs in SC. Go to Start | All Programs | Engineering Software | HCS 2000 to launch it. Files can be saved locally.
