Using the HP ScanJet Scanners
![]()
Scanning allows you to transform a hardcopy image into a digital image. A scanned image can be saved as a file, copied into a file, attached to an electronic mail message, and posted on a web page. With appropriate equipment, scanned images can also be modified and be printed to make T-shirts, mugs, mouse pads, etc.
There are four HP ScanJet scanners in the Hering and Elder labs (1220 SC and 1231 SC), one in each of the four rooms of the labs. Each scanner is connected to an adjacent Windows computer. There is also a ScanJet scanner in the consulting office, 1253 SC.
Preview Scan
To start the scanner software, from a Windows computer that is adjacent to and connected by cable to a ScanJet scanner, go to Start | Programs | HP ScanJet Software | HP PrecisionScan Pro. Begin by scanning your original document or photo, called a Preview scan. Open the scanner lid. Place your original face down on the scanner glass, making sure that the upper right corner is flush with the upper right corner of the scanner glass.
Press the Scan button on the front of the scanner. Or
click the Preview
button on the toolbar. Or select the Scan | Preview menu item. If you
are using the HP ScanJet Coach for help with scanning, have that it do
the Preview scan for you by clicking Do It. All of these result in the
same action: your document is scanned.
The Preview command displays an image of the entire scanner glass and the original on the scanner glass.
Select an area of the scanned image to work with. This is called the selection area.
When the scanner previews your original, the scanning software automatically selects a type in the Output Type menu. The output type determines many of the settings for your scanned image, including resolution, exposure, and sharpening. These settings are different for different image types, such as color, black and white, and grayscale.
The optimal output type is dependent on two things:
If you are using the HP ScanJet Coach, use it to select your output type settings.
Send Scan to DestinationTo send the scan to an application, use the Scan | Scan To menu item

on the software available on the local computer. Some of the applications available
on the Windows machine in the consulting office are Adobe Acrobat, Netscape,
Paint, and CorelDraw.
