blue line

Scanning allows you to transform a hardcopy image into a digital image. A scanned image can be saved as a file, copied into a file, attached to an electronic mail message, and posted on a web page. With appropriate equipment, scanned images can also be modified and be printed to make T-shirts, mugs, mouse pads, etc.

There are four HP ScanJet scanners in the Hering and Elder labs (1220 SC and 1231 SC), one in each of the four rooms of the labs. Each scanner is connected to an adjacent Windows computer. There is also a ScanJet scanner in the consulting office, 1253 SC.

Preview Scan

To start the scanner software, from a Windows computer that is adjacent to and connected by cable to a ScanJet scanner, go to Start | Programs | HP ScanJet Software | HP PrecisionScan Pro. Begin by scanning your original document or photo, called a Preview scan. Open the scanner lid. Place your original face down on the scanner glass, making sure that the upper right corner is flush with the upper right corner of the scanner glass.

Press the Scan button on the front of the scanner. Or click the Preview scanjet preview icon  button on the toolbar. Or select the Scan | Preview menu item. If you are using the HP ScanJet Coach for help with scanning, have that it do the Preview scan for you by clicking Do It. All of these result in the same action: your document is scanned.

Selection Area

The Preview command displays an image of the entire scanner glass and the original on the scanner glass.

Select an area of the scanned image to work with. This is called the selection area.

  1. Move the mouse pointer over the area you want to select and click the left mouse button. Or move the mouse pointer around in the Preview area until the mouse pointer changes to a cross.
  2. Press and hold the mouse pointer on one corner of the area you want to select, then drag diagonally across the image until the border surrounds the area.
  3. Release the mouse button. A rectangular area with handles appears around the selection area.
Output Type

When the scanner previews your original, the scanning software automatically selects a type in the Output Type menu. The output type determines many of the settings for your scanned image, including resolution, exposure, and sharpening. These settings are different for different image types, such as color, black and white, and grayscale.

The optimal output type is dependent on two things:

For example, if the final destination for the image is a black and white printer, scan in grayscale.  For use on a web page, use color in a lower resolution.

If you are using the HP ScanJet Coach, use it to select your output type settings.

Send Scan to Destination

To send the scan to an application, use the Scan | Scan To menu item or click the Scan To scanjet scan to icon  button on the toolbar. The applications that the document can be sent to depend on the software available on the local computer. Some of the applications available on the Windows machine in the consulting office are Adobe Acrobat, Netscape, Paint, and CorelDraw.

Drag-and-Drop

To drag-and-drop the image into another application:

  1. Position the mouse pointer inside the selection area. Press and hold the left mouse button.
  2. Using the mouse, drag the image outside the scanning software window and into the open document in the destination program. If the destination program accepts drag-and-drop, the pointer changes to this: scanjet pointer two squares icon
  3. Release the mouse button. If the destination program can’t accept this drag-and-drop action, the pointer changes to a circle with a slash through it: scanjet do not do icon

To drag-and-drop to the Windows desktop:

  1. Press and hold the Ctrl key while pressing and holding the left mouse button.
  2. Drag the image to the desktop.
  3. Release the mouse button, then release the Ctrl key.

Copy and Paste

To copy and paste the image to another application:

Save and Print

To save the image to a file
Go to Scan | Save As, or click the Save scanject save icon button on the toolbar.

Note that you can reduce the file size by choosing the amount of compression for a JPEG file.

To print the image to a printer
Go to Scan | Print, or click the Print scanjet print icon  button on the toolbar.
