The software tether allows you to run Windows software that requires a license from a remote computer. The application software such as Matlab is installed on your local computer and the tether connects you to the Engineering license server. Tethering is port forwarding to the license server where the licenses to run applications reside. To use tethered software, you need the correct .ini file as well as the appropriate license file. To run tethered software requires that you run a program like SecureCRT and the application software on your computer, then install the software tether, as described below.

Install SecureCRT

First you will need to install SecureCRT, if you haven't already. You can download SecureCRT from ITS. Login to that site with your Hawk ID and password.

Run SecureCRT one time to create the Sessions directory mentioned in the following paragraph.

To install and run tethered software, you will need to configure your machine so that it can talk to the Engineering College license server. The mechanism to do this is called port-forwarding. The software-tether.ini file is a SecureCRT session file that configures your machine to port forward to the license server. Download the session file (software-tether.ini) from the Matlab page and put it in the Sessions folder for the SecureCRT application. For release SecureCRT 5.0, this folder is located at:
C:\Documents and Settings\account-name\Application Data\VanDyke\Config\Sessions

Install the Application

First you must install the application that you want to run tethered.

Matlab

(For Engineering faculty, staff, and students) Get the Matlab images and install as per instructions on that page. Note: to connect to the appropriate forms page requires authentication with your Engineering account and password.

To install Matlab you must be running SecureCRT and have the appropriate .ini file in the SecureCRT Sessions folder, as described above. For complete instructions on downloading and installing Matlab, see the Matlab page.

Using the Software Tether

Connect to the Engineering network using SecureCRT with the software-tether session and then run the application. You will need to connect using this session each time you want to run the application.

When you are done, log out of the SecureCRT session.  If the SecureCRT session closes while you are running the application, simply reconnect to re-establish communication with the license server.
