Scratch Space for Students
Files are not backed up and files are removed the day after grades are due each semester. Files cannot be recovered once they have been removed. You are responsible for backing up important files during the semester and archiving any files you want to keep before the removal date. You can backup or archive files to a thumb drive, CD, or DVD from Windows or Linux.
To access from Windows, map a drive using the path:
\\scratch.drive.engr.uiowa.edu\scratch
You can pick any drive letter above H:, but we recommend you map the drive to the letter S: for scratch.
Once mapped, create a new folder using a name that is likely to be unique; we suggest using your engineering ID. Copy or create your files in that single folder.
To access from Linux, type the command:
cd /scratch
Create a directory with a unique name, like your engineering ID; we suggest using your engineering ID. Copy or create your files in that single directory.
Read the README.FOR.INSTRUCTIONS file in the scratch space. Most of the information on this page is contained in that file.
We suggest that you use your engineering ID as the folder or directory name, as it will be unique. Use that folder or directory to store all your files in the scratch area. Note that the file system tags all files with the ID of the person who created the file.
Scratch space is provided as a temporary (semester long) storage space for files related to your course work. The University acceptable use policy (AUP) and the Engineering acceptable use policy govern use of this space. From the Engineering AUP: "Use the computing resources solely to pursue the educational mission of the College of Engineering and in an efficient, ethical, and legal manner."
CSS will periodically scan the scratch space to review compliance with those policies. When a scan shows what may be non-class files, you'll get email suggesting that you abide by the AUPs mentioned above.
If you have questions about using this space, please see the user consultant in 1253 SC, 335-5055.
